Heidrick & Struggles: Four Tips for Success in a New Executive Position
Renee Neri, a partner of Heidrick & Struggles' NY office, shares how to "Start Well and Stay" at a new executive level position with these four tips.
The first thing to consider is the amount of change that a transition will entail to help predict the likelihood of success or failure, by considering the extent to which these new roles differ. Seven dimensions merit particular attention:
- The type of company
- The scope of role
- The level of role
- Company culture
Broadly speaking, if three of these areas differ from the executive’s previous role, the possibility for failure in the first 18 months can be as high as 50%. If five or more factors differ, the failure rate can be 80% or higher.
The key to a success executive level transition is careful attention to these four areas:
- Aligning with the culture
- Understanding the strategic area
- Establishing team and management practices
- Developing strong stakeholder relationships
