Is The Global Economy Heading for Better or Worse?

It’s been a long time since economic forecasters have been challenged so much on what the year will bring as since the beginning of 2017. While the consensus view has long been for a gradually slowing trend in the global economy, recent developments (e.g. Brexit, the new Trump administration, tensions in the South China sea, crisis in Brazil, etc.) are creating more uncertainty to the economic outlook than at any time since the global financial crisis almost a decade ago. In this session, Bart van Ark will discuss the fundamental drivers underlying the global trend in economic growth, and distinguish between the short-term challenges (such as geopolitical tensions, policy uncertainty, and financial market volatility), and the more fundamental disruptions (including digital technology, the energy landscape, global trade and debt and deficits). It is those disruptive factors which business leaders should distill from all the noise, as those are the key factors which can change the direction of the global economy in the medium-term … for better or worse.

The session will make seemingly paradoxical connections between pause, purpose, and performance. Blending research, stories, and interaction, Kevin will help us to elevate our professional and personal leadership in 2017 and beyond.

General Session: A Future that Works: Automation, Employment, and Productivity

Remarkable recent advances in robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning have raised a number of important questions about automation technologies. Automation has the potential to change the daily work activities of everyone, from miners and landscape gardeners to commercial bankers, fashion designers, welders—and CEOs. But how quickly will these technologies become a reality in the workplace? And what will their impact be on employment and on productivity in the global economy? We’ll explore these questions and more based on research from the McKinsey Global Institute.

Crossing the Thinnest Line: Why Embracing Diversity & Overcoming Bias are Critical to the Future

Diversity and inclusion has been a topic at the forefront of many of our most important business discussions and debates. Across geography and industry, leaders are looking at the data linking diversity to better financial performance and asking how they can take advantage of the diversity dividend. But along with this opportunity, come a litany of complicated issues and challenges. Diversity is hard – the challenges are many but most leaders agree: it is essential to business. Diversity must become an asset, economically and socially, rather than a source of conflict.

"That was a presentation that, while it went on for I think an hour or two, we could have probably spent the entire day talking about that...I took a lot of that content back to our office in Toronto and shared that with our partners, and we still talk about it to this day."
