Russell Reynolds Associates: The Rise of Women in Legal Positions

Russell Reynolds Associates has published findings from their years of researching the in-house hiring of legal positions at Fortune 500 companies and has found an increase in gender diversity among these roles. In particular, the number of women appointed to the general counsel role in these companies has dramatically increased. The way in which these women are being hired for this position is also changing, with there now being the same amount of women hires being appointed internally as externally.

Key findings include:

  • 35% of general counsel positions in 2016 went to women, up from 24% in 2012.
  • The number of women hired from external positions is up 63% in 2016 from 2012.
  • Since 2014, 91% of women hired from an external source had previous in-house experience.
