Boyden: The Internet of Things

A new series from Boyden titled The Internet of Things examines how M2M technologies are changing industrial, consumer, healthcare and financial companies.  In the latest installment Boyden provides advice on how to integrate people with different skills, work styles and expectations to achieve success in a new-style industrial company.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a major segment of the Internet of Things that includes advanced manufacturing, digital oilfields and smart-grid automation. GE believes IIOT could generate as much as $15 trillion in global economic growth over the next 20 years. With the projected growth, comes the need for talent that can help blend industrial understanding with software expertise.

Talent acquisition poses some challenges. Among the challenges:

  • Advanced software and analytics are now at the forefront of Industrial IoT products and solutions
  • Business leaders realize they need to recruit and retain top software development talent to the organization
  • It is critical to attract the right software talent and approach hiring, integration and retention with certain considerations
  • Top software engineers have not typically aspired to work on industrial applications or work for an ‘industrial’ company
