Heidrick & Struggles analyzed the new directors added to Fortune 500 boards in 2021. We can see how much these boards are moving the dial on changing their composition to address new expectations.

In 2021, boards of companies in the Fortune 500 continued a trend that began in the second half of 2020: bringing in an infusion of fresh thinking by reaching out to groups of people from increasingly diverse backgrounds. Since 2015, 2021 was the highest percentage share of first-time public board directors at 43%.
