The Insight Group: Leadership Transformation in a Digital Age

Rohan A. Carr of The Insight Group writes about the insights of Mr. Vivek Bhatia, Asia Pacific Regional CEO of Thyssen Krupp, who spoke at a recent IRC leadership event in Singapore.

In his presentation, Bhatia explored the key requirements of successful leadership within the 4th industrial revolution, or the digital age, which is now described as ‘VUCA’ – Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous.

Bhatia suggested that leaders need to:

  • Provide direction and purpose (such that it can be ‘owned’ by all within the organisation)
  • Drive action and outcomes (doing so as part of their team and driving innovative problem solving within their organisation)
  • Secure talent and competencies (the different operating environment and values has significant implications for hiring, on boarding and the retention of talent)
  • Exhibit personal values and communicate them. (The capacity to mould the values and culture of the organisation is the way a leader can have the greatest lasting impact)
