New insights have been shared by consultants Ben Shrewsbury, Fawad Bajwa, and Scott E Smith from Russell Reynolds Associates.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) role is experiencing a resurgence, with more companies incorporating it into their C-suite. The role has evolved to become larger and more strategic, positioning itself as a strong candidate for the CEO position. Given the rise of digital technologies and heightened sustainability expectations, the expectation is for the role to continue growing.

Research conducted by RRA in 2022 revealed that 43% of Fortune 250 CEOs had previously held the COO position, making it the most common internal role before assuming the top job.
