Russell Reynolds Associates: What It Takes to be an Outside CEO of a Family-Owned Business

Russell Reynolds Associates has published results of a study looking into outside CEOs of family-owned businesses. Noting that the focus and operations of these companies often differ from public companies, leaders must adapt to these circumstances in order to succeed in such a position. Russell Reynolds asked 37 CEOs of family-owned businesses from a wide range of industries and geographies to complete their Occupational Personality Questionnaire, which measures management and leadership styles and behavior.

The study revealed that, on average, outside CEOs of family-owned businesses scored higher than CEOs of public companies on the following three characteristics:

  • Deliberate
  • Flexible
  • Collaborative
