Heidrick & Struggles: Best Practices for Exiting a Company

Heidrick & Struggles conducted a national survey of both senior executives and senior human resources officers in order to gain insight as the to the best practices for handling a senior leader’s exit from a company. While accepting a new position at different company is common and something nearly every executive does at least once throughout his or her career, there can be lasting effects if the situation is not handled well.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Over 80% of both the transitioning executive and human resources executives believe leaving one’s job poorly will have an adverse effect on one’s future career.
  • The most recommended tip from survey respondents in how to leave a job gracefully is to approach the boss/board first.
  • Damaged reputation and strained relationship with former colleagues and former mentors all ranked high as the negative effects of leaving a job poorly.
