Saxton Bampfylde: Chairing the Trust

With the National Health Service employing 1.3 million, it has become one of the largest organizations in Europe. The background of NHS’ experienced leaders encompasses a diverse range of industry sectors, including banking, engineering and academia. With the growth occurring, Saxton Bampfylde interviewed NHS chief executives about what they want from their chairs, and the value NHS chairs are adding.

The survey was based on four questions:

  • From your point of view, what three or four things do you most look for in a chair of an NHS trust?
  • What characteristics of a chair are particularly important for or peculiar to the health sector as opposed to any other organization?
  • What characteristic of a chair, if any, are particularly relevant to the kind of NHS trust of authority which you lead?
  • Do you have any views on the breadth of representation of women and ethnic minorities?
