Korn Ferry: Defusing Heated Disagreements Among Teams

In this article from Korn Ferry, regular contributor Daniel Goleman discusses the ways leaders can defuse conflicts between team members. Goleman points out that while having team members with different viewpoints can produce excellent ideas and encourage innovation and collaboration, the discussion can often get out of hand. With passions for ideas running high, employees can often interpret a disagreeing viewpoint as a personal attack, which causes teammates to begin to vocally attacking their coworker’s personal characteristics.

Goleman provides three strategies that can be implemented to handle heated conflicts among team members:

  • Manage conversations
  • Manage relationships
