SURVEY: 67% OF SENIOR EXECUTIVES OPPOSE MANDATORY RETIREMENT AGE FOR CEOs
New York, NY, June 3, 2008 — Results from a survey of 398 global senior executives reveal that two-thirds (67%) of respondents oppose mandatory retirement of CEOs. The survey was conducted from May 5 to May 28, 2008, by BlueSteps, the career management service of the Association of Executive Search Consultants (AESC).
Full results from the survey reveal:
Should there be a mandatory retirement age for CEOs?
Yes, 60+ – 6%
Yes, 65+ – 17%
Yes, 70+ – 10%
No, there should not be a mandatory retirement age – 67%
"Age is the last slippery slope for CEOs. But can we really draw a clear line and say that a CEO is competent at 64 but not at 65? There are a lot of great CEOs over age 60 and more may be needed as the War for Talent increases in intensity," noted AESC president Peter Felix. "I think we'll see age-ism under the spotlight as the U.S. electorate considers a candidate over 70."
Survey respondents were from the following regions: The Americas, 61%; Europe, Middle East, Africa, 30%; Asia Pacific, 9%.
